GRANDMOTHER Dorothy Young had only one companion - Jimmy the Terrier, but Dorothy could only watch in horror when a wall collapsed, killing her little pal.

Tragedy struck when a wall collapsed on top of five-month-old Jimmy while they were out walking.

The 6ft high wall fell as the 70-year-old was walking the dog.

She was lucky not to sustain serious injuries herself but there was no chance for Jimmy.

Neighbours and motorists passing the scene rushed to help.

One man took Jimmy to a vet but there was nothing that could be done for him.

It happened in Alan Drayton Way Bishopstoke .

The wall had been in a poor state and it collapsed during high winds.

The remains of the wall, which lie behind a shop and two takeaway restaurants, have now been cordoned off.

Today, it remained unclear who owns it.

Shock Dorothy told the Daily Echo: "I was walking back home when I just heard this loud whooshing sound and I was knocked into the road. I had a terrible shock.

"I thought I had better get up quick because I could hear cars coming and I heard my neighbour shout to see if I was all right.

"She came over and told me not to turn around and they put a T-shirt over Jimmy, but I could see he was badly hurt as there was so much blood coming from his head.

"I was just getting to know Jimmy who was really a lovely puppy and a good companion.

"It is very upsetting and I feel very lucky I was all right.

"I'm just glad it did not happen when the school children were walking along there because if it landed on a little one it could have killed them."

Dorothy is now speaking to a solicitor to see if she can claim compensation for the accident and buy another pet.

Dorothy's neighbour, Susan Stratton, was walking home when she saw the wall fall on Dorothy and Jimmy. She added: "I heard this loud crack and a bang and we saw the whole thing come down. It was terrifying and we ran over to make sure Dorothy wasn't hurt.

"Then we saw what had happened to Jimmy and it was awful. She loved that puppy and he was her only companion.

"Because Jimmy's injuries were so serious he had to be put down.

"I would like to thank those who helped Dorothy and the man who took us to the vet."

Mrs Stratton added that the wall had often been a concern of neighbours and was on a busy route in the village which children often used to and from Stoke Park Infants and Junior schools.
