PASSENGERS were injured when two buses crashed in Southampton.

Paramedics treated passengers at the scene in Bitterne while some were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police later confirmed three people sustained “slight” injuries.

Eyewitnesses described how police and ambulances were “all over the place” and officers directed traffic around the collision at the junction of Peartree Avenue and Little Lances Hill around 2.20pm yesterday.

The single decker Bluestar buses, which had been following each other, were both in service when the smash happened.

A spokesman for the firm said the bus in front had to brake suddenly to “avoid another vehicle” in front.

The bus behind then smashed into the back of it after it failed to brake in time.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, the spokesman said.

Both drivers were shaken but uninjured.

The spokesman said both vehicles suffered “quite severe damage” and they will now be assessed by the company’s engineering team in Eastleigh as the company launches an internal investigation.

No routes have been affected as a result of the incident.

There is no police investigation into the crash.
