TAKING the dog for a run will take on a whole new meaning when Hampshire hosts its first "cani-cross" event.

The sport was invented by husky owners whose dogs needed a good daily work-out but could not be let off the lead.

Hampshire's introduction to "cani-cross" will take place in the New Forest on October 28.

Forestry Commission ranger Helen Chalk, pictured right, said: "People will be able to chose between a 2.5k and a 5.4k route.

"The skill lies in teaching your pet to jog alongside you without dragging, getting distracted or zooming under your feet.

"My dog Poppy is now an expert, which is why we will be having a go at the long route."

Miss Chalk said the sport was for dogs aged at least one year which could easily manage a 5k run.
