COUNCILLORS are today making their final decision on whether to close Test Valley Borough Council’s Romsey offices in the face of bitter opposition from staff and unions.
A special meeting of the borough’s full council is due to consider selling off the Duttons Road offices and moving some staff to a customer services unit at the former magistrates building in the town.
The proposal, which would save more than £100,000 a year, would mean about 65 staff having to relocate to the council’s main offices in Andover.
Council meetings would be held at Crosfield Hall, which would be upgraded.
The plan was approved on Wednesday by the council’s ruling Tory Cabinet.
The decision was made despite pleas by the opposition Liberal Democrat group and the union Unison.
A petition containing 1,400 signatures opposing the plan was presented to council leader Cllr Ian Carr.
