A WINCHESTER councillor is warning that the primary school crisis will worsen unless another new school is provided in the northern part of the city.
Most local primary schools are operating close to capacity and several, such as St Bede and Weeke, have had to build extensions to accommodate the growing number of pupils.
The county council recently announced a new ‘super school’ for pupils aged four to 16 would be provided at The Westgate Secondary School in Fulflood with the demolition of the Rotherly boarding house.
But Dominic Hiscock, a long-time chairman of governors at St Bede Primary School in Hyde, says that is not enough.
He said the Conservative-controlled city and county councils were doing too little to prevent another serious crisis in the near future.
Calling on the city council to act, the Lib Dem said: “The problem is going to get worse but no one is talking about it. People seem to be in denial, which isn’t helpful.”
