Winchester’S Christmas lights switch-on takes place on November 15 in The Broadway from 3pm-7pm.

Crowds will be entertained with live music and the lights will be switched on by a yet-to-be-named special guest at 6pm.

But Business Improvement District marketing manager Amy McCartan said there would be some changes this year because of the number of spectators expected.

She said: “Due to the crowds being so large last year we are moving the stage so it will go across the road from the Guildhall to Subway which will allow crowds to gather up the High Street.

“We had around 7,000 people attend last year and we are expecting a similar number again.”

Then on November 22 the Christmas Market opens at the cathedral beginning with the annual lantern parade.

Crowds will march from the Great Hall from 6pm down the High Street and to the cathedral grounds.

If the BID is not voted in for a second term these events will not be affected as the organisation will not stop working until next March.

The BID has again arranged for free parking in Winchester over the Christmas period.

All non-barrier controlled car parks will be free on Thursdays from 4pm onwards from November 15, and will be free from 4pm every day in the week leading up to Christmas.

An extra park and ride service will also be provided for free in the five days before Christmas.
