AROUND a dozen bikes were stolen during a break-in at a celebrated community cycle hub.

Eight or nine high-end bikes destined for use in the Southampton Sporterium in April, plus a couple of mountain bikes, were taken from a Monty's Bike Hub storage unit in Montague Avenue, Sholing.

Each bike had been worked on for several hours by volunteers for the charity and social enterprise, which supports all things cycling in the east of Southampton.

Staff expressed their frustration at the break-in, but later confirmed the stolen items had been recovered.

The bikes, worth thousands of pounds, include an unusual bespoke silver racing bike and a distinctive yellow and red one.

Daily Echo:

Volunteers had spent many hours working on them to allow a beginner road biking club to be launched and a Monty's Bike Hub team to ride the special bespoke bikes during the Southampton Sporterium event on Saturday April 22.

The break-in, which also caused significant damage to the door of the storage unit, took place overnight between Monday and Tuesday (January 30 and 31).
