SAINTS goalkeeper coach Andrew Sparkes has left the club this summer after four years in his role.

Sparkes joined from Orlando Pirates in July 2019 under Ralph Hasenhuttl, having previously worked with Swansea City Academy and New York Red Bulls.

Sparkes departs to make way for a new manager, expected to be Swansea’s Russell Martin, to bring in their own backroom staff.

The Daily Echo is told Saints are still discussing a new one-year deal with Willy Caballero, although nothing concrete is agreed upon yet.

The 41 year old Argentine acted as goalkeeping coach for the final games of the season with Sparkes injured and is a valued veteran of the dressing room.

Daily Echo:

Goalkeeping coach Dean Thornton joined Martin at MK Dons in November 2019 and has linked up with the former Norwich City man again in South Wales.

Assistant manager Matt Gill, who has coached at Tranmere Rovers and Ipswich Town, is also expected to come to St Mary’s after working under Martin in both of his jobs.

Saints will finalise and announce their full backroom staff set up in the coming weeks.
