Expect more traffic misery on the Redbridge Causeway as further closures come into force.

The ongoing works on the A35 are set to continue after ‘several unexpected defects’ were found.

Several overnight full closures of the eastbound A35 will come into force next month as a result.

Sharing the news online, Cllr Malcolm Wade, county councillor for Hythe, listed the new issues.

He detailed how Hampshire County Council found the defects in both the bridge decks and the underlying pavement layers between the bridges.

“These were hidden beneath the old surfacing material, and therefore only visible once it was removed”, his post reads.

This includes: larger than expected defects, voids and corroded reinforcement bars in the top surfaces of concrete bridge decks, voids in the granular fill material behind bridge supports, and cracks in underlying pavement layers between the bridges.

Blocked drainage gullies with damaged cover frames were also discovered.

Further defects include loose, crumbly material beneath the edge of the concrete crash barrier along the full lengths of the eastbound bridges, and defects to abandoned service chambers in the road between the bridges.

The council has confirmed this has ‘forced a delay’ in the planned programme of works.

The A35 eastbound carriageway re-waterproofing and resurfacing works are therefore expected to be completed in early to mid-August.

The current lane two closure of the eastbound A35 will remain in place until these works have been carried out.
