AN ANNUAL regatta that has taken place for more than 140 years is set to take place in Hampshire.

The Swanwick, Bursledon and Warsash Regatta will take place on September 1 from 1:30pm at the Elephant Boatyard .

A variety of races will be held throughout the day including the addition of two new paddle board races.

There will also be a bar, BBQ, a tombola and a raffle for guests to enjoy.

The Water Carnival will take place at approximately 3:30pm and this years theme is Australian inspired to celebrate explorer James Cook who first discovered the country 250 years ago.

Peter Falconer, 71, committee member and commentator of the event said: "People always put in so much effort with the theme and we are thankful to those that do.

"I encourage as many people as possible to dress up and get involved.

"The event grows in popularity every year, it is fantastic.

"It's all about people having fun on the water as well as appreciating the history of the event.

After the races have finished there will be a torchlight parade where a chain of dingies will be tied and towed together whilst being illuminated by torches.

Finally, the night will close with a firework display which will begin at 9pm.

Peter went on to say: "Everyone loves the fireworks but I personally love the torchlight display.

It is beautiful and its lovely at this time of year, especially now the nights are drawing in earlier."

No entry forms are required for anyone wanting to participate in any of the races.

However, children under the age of 14 must wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid to take part.

Cash prizes of £15, £10 and £5 will also be awarded to the first, second and third best floats in the water carnival.
