CAMPAIGNERS battling to clean up Winchester's air quality will be asking residents how they think the city could be improved following the launch of a major transport consultation.

Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) and Winchester Friends of the Earth will be holding an open event on November 28 to discuss how Winchester’s air can be made cleaner, greener and safer.

It follows the launch of the Winchester Movement Strategy consultation, which asking residents and visitors for their views on how traffic and pedestrian flows around the city should be managed in the future. It also follows the launch of Winchester City Council's (WCC)Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) earlier this year.

Tom Brenan, WinACC executive director, said: “Five polls carried out by WinACC between October 2016 and October 2017 revealed consistent public support for restricting vehicle access and increasing pedestrian areas in the town centre to reduce air pollution. This event will be a great opportunity for people to find out how they can take action to help improve Winchester’s air quality.”

The meeting will see Simon Finch, corporate head of regulatory services at WCC provide more details on the joint WCC and Hampshire County Council Movement Strategy consultation. Chris Gilham, of Winchester Friends of the Earth will also be outlining the different forms of air pollution with their effects on health, while David Ingram, head of environment and licensing at WCC, will provide an update on the implementation and progress of Winchester’s AQAP.

The free event will be held at the University of Winchester's John Stripe Studio, in Sparkford Road, at 7.30pm on November 28.
