Hampshire family donate more than £10,000 with business after son passes away from heart attack

Adam Lynas died in June last year after a heart attack, aged 35, and his family and colleagues have seen a hospital room refurbished and named in his memory.

The former KPMG worker from Botley collapsed and died within minutes due to an undiagnosed heart problem. Now, Southampton General Hospital’s cardiac ward for children carries his legacy after a series of fundraising activities from his family members and colleagues at the tax and advisory firm.

The Echo room, used to scan children on the ward, now features a mural, television and multicoloured lights to keep youngsters calm and still through the process.

Through sponsored rowing events and dress-down days, a total of £9,639 has been given to the hospital, which rises to £10,300 with gift aid.

Adam was ‘fit and healthy’ according to his mother, Joyce, when he died, and had been training for the Great South Run.

Andy, Adam’s younger brother, took on the run in his place, raising more than £1,000 in the process.

Joyce said: “It’s incredible and a little overwhelming to see what the hospital have been able to do with the donations.

“Adam was a phenomenal person and a donor, with his organs and tissue used following his death. He will remain with us always.”

Dr Kevin Roman, a paediatric cardiologist said: “We are very grateful for the donations that Adam’s family and colleagues have been able to raise.

“Around ten children use the room every day, and with the refurbishment it’s going to make our jobs a lot easier.”

Adam’s boss and director at KPMG, based in Chandler’s Ford, Wendy Wardell said: “Adam was a fun-loving, well-respected individual in my team at KPMG and following his tragic loss, his friends and colleagues wanted to do something to raise money in his memory.

“To visit the finished room in the E1 children’s ward was fantastic and a pleasure to see such a fitting tribute to Adam’s vibrant personality. I am sure the children will love it.”
