“GRAB a jab” is the message to Southampton residents as a walk-in Covid vaccination clinic will be opening in the city this weekend.

It comes as figures show more than 1,600 cases of the Delta variant have been recorded across Hampshire.

Data released on the Government website has shown that, as of June 25, there were 1,604 cases of the Delta variant recorded across the county.

This is up from 974 cases last week.

A total of 329 cases were recorded in Southampton - up 147.

Based at the already-established vaccine centre in Oakley Road, Millbrook, anyone aged 18-years-old or over will be able to turn up and get a jab.

But people are being warned there are limited spaces and they may need to wait to be seen.

Both first and second doses will be available.

It will be open on Sunday between 11am and 3pm, and Monday from 8am to 9.30am, then again from 5pm to 7pm.

However, to get your second jab it must have been at least eight weeks since the first dose for people aged over 40, and 12 weeks for people aged under 40.

The move is part of a Government drive to get all adults at least their first vaccine before the July 19-earmarked lockdown easing date.

The walk-in site in Southampton is one of more than 100 across the country opening this weekend.

A spokesperson for Solent NHS Trust, which is operating the site, said: “There are limited appointments and people may need to wait to be seen. Those who are not able to take advantage of a walk-in vaccination on Sunday or Monday will be supported to book vaccination appointments by visiting via the national booking system.

They added: “Volunteers have been a major factor in the success of the vaccination roll out, with over 210,000 hours gifted across Solent’s four vaccination hubs since March. On average, 200 people volunteer every day at Oakley Road."

Sir Simon Stevens, NHS chief executive, said: “With more than 63 million jabs already delivered by the NHS in England, we’re now in a race to the finish line. It’s now easier than ever to get your life-saving jab, and the more of us who are vaccinated the safer and freer we all will be. So why not join millions of others and ‘GrabAJab’ to take advantage of this life-saving protection.”
