The M27 in Hampshire was closed overnight after a serious accident.
Police closed the road at about midnight following the accident.
It happened on the westbound carriageway between junction eight for Hamble and Bursledon and junction nine for Park Gate.
Traffic was brought to a standstill by the incident and diverted towards the A27.
In a statement on Facebook, posted around 2am, the force said: "If you're an early morning commuter please be aware we've been dealing with a serious accident on the M27 between junctions 8 and 9.
"The motorway is currently closed Westbound at the time of posting this and diversions are in place.
"We hope to have the road back open around 5am."
Details of the accident have not been released but the road was opened by about 5.45am.
