AS WITH many cities across the country, Southampton has seen its fair share of pubs come and go over the years.
In years gone by almost every road had a pub on it – some of them more than one.
One such road was Millbrook Road, where we know there has been at least eight watering holes.
They gradually closed until all but one disappeared - the Key and Anchor.

The Beehive Inn
The Beehive Inn was located at 10 Millbrook Road and dated back as far as the 1830s, possibly even further. The pub closed on November 21, 1977 and was demolished to make way for an office block.

The Swan
The Swan was once located where KFC and McDonalds now are. The pub opened around 1970 and took the place of a popular pub named The Fighting Cocks.

Sailors Return
Sailors Return was located on the junction with Waterhouse Lane. The pub dated back to the 1860s but was demolished and the site used by the St Johns Ambulance since 2002.

The Eagle
The Eagle was located at 150 Millbrook Road and dated back to the 1860s. The pub closed on January 25, 1981 and is now a house.

The Royal Mail
The Royal Mail was a coaching inn and was said to have been more than 300 years old. It closed in March 1967 when Millbrook Road was widened.

The Oliver Cromwell
The Oliver Cromwell was situated on Millbrook Road on the opposite side of the road to the junction with Boundary Close. The pub was more than 400 years old but was closed in 1967 to make way for the widening of Millbrook Road. It’s rumoured that Oliver Cromwell once stayed the night there.

The Maltster
The Maltster could be found at 226 Millbrook Road. It closed in 1975 and was swept away to make way for Mountbatten Way. It was previously known as The Railway Hotel.
