Andrew Surman helped himself to a hat-trick and Kenwyne Jones bagged a brace of goals as Southampton continued their Coca-Cola Championship promotion push in style with a comprehensive 5-2 victory over 10-man Barnsley.

Surman, who had not scored since Saints beat Leicester on the final day of last season, scored his first goals of the campaign as Jones continued his rich vein of goalscoring form.

Surman brought Southampton deservedly level after Barnsley had taken an early lead through Daniel Nardiello.

Saints defenders Claus Lundekvam and Gareth Bale made a mess of the offside trap in the second minute and former Manchester United youngster Nardiello found the bottom left-hand corner from 12-yards.

George Burley's side responded well and Jermaine Wright came close to equalising with a long-range shot that whistled narrowly past a post.

The same player then saw a goalbound effort blocked by Sam Togwell before Saints' pressure was finally rewarded in the 11th minute. The ball broke to Surman on the edge of the area and he beat Nick Colgan with a sweetly-struck half-volley.

Jones took his tally for the season to 14 goals with two strikes in the second half as he found the net for the sixth time in five matches.

The first came just three minutes after the break when the Trinidad and Tobago international rose to head home Rudi Skacel's right-wing cross to put Saints 2-1 ahead.

Istvan Ferenczi marked his first start with a goal to bring Barnsley level. The Hungarian headed Martin Devaney's cross beyond Kelvin Davis in the 68th-minute.

Parity lasted just five minutes before Jones grabbed his second of the game from the penalty spot. Bobby Hassell brought down Bale inside the area and Jones coolly placed the spot-kick past Nick Colgan.

Nardiello, booked in the first-half for a foul on Alexander Ostlund, was sent off in the 75th-minute when he received his second yellow card for hacking down Chris Baird.

Surman collected Bradley Wright-Phillips' pass before arrowing a shot into the top corner from 18-yards with 10 minutes remaining and then he completed an unlikely treble from the spot after Brian Howard was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Southampton could have made the scoreline even more emphatic when Bale carved open the Barnsley defence with a surging run but, with the goal at his mercy, Marek Saganowski headed the youngster's cross wide from six yards.

Colgan had to be at his best to palm away an effort from Bale midway through the half before repeating the trick to deny Saganowski.

Saints boss Burley made two changes to his side. Alexander Ostlund replaced Chris Makin at full-back and Saganowski was surprisingly given the nod over Grzegorz Rasiak up front, the Saints' top scorer made to settle for a place on the bench.

A virus that swept through Oakwell this week forced Barnsley manager Simon Davey into five changes. Lewin Nyatanga made his debut in place of Rob Atkinson while Paul Heckingbottom replaced Adam Eckersley.

Togwell returned at the expense of Grant McCann and Nardiello replaced Peter Rajczi. Marc Richards made way as Istvan Ferenczi was handed his first start for the club.
