LAWRIE McMenemy has lifted the lid on his long running feud with fellow Saints legend Terry Paine.
In McMenemy’s revealing autobiography, ‘A Lifetime’s Obsession’, which has been released today, the club’s most successful manager reveals the details of the frosty relationship he has had with the Saints record appearance holder over more than 40 years.
McMenemy says he believed Paine , now club president, was trying to undermine him when he first landed the job as Saints manager, taking over from Ted Bates.
Even when the pair last met just a couple of years ago he admitted suspicion remained.
In exclusive extracts of his book appearing in today’s Daily Echo, McMenemy wrote: “What I had not considered when I signed my contract was that my main adversary would be Terry Paine, the one player I had believed would be my on-field champion.
“He was a major problem I found myself having to confront.”
