WONDER striker Warren Bentley made it five goals in two games for Gosport Borough on Saturday.

The former Winchester wizard conjured up a hat-trick as Gosport put Tom Widdrington’s Eastbourne Borough to the sword 3-1 in the Vanarama National League South.

Eastbourne struck first through Elliott Roman on 20 minutes but, from then on, it was all about Bentley.

He levelled with a typically clinical finish 15 minutes later before striking twice in the second half - first firing in a diagonal shot from a tight angle and then capitalising on a cutback by another ex-Winchester forward Chris Flood.

Bentley, a PE teacher at Sholing Technology College, said: “I’m playing with better players on better pitches and, if you’re playing in a team that’s on top, you will get chances. I need to make sure I keep putting them away.”

Delighted boss Alex Pike added: “Warren will rightly get the credit for his hat-trick, but you’ve also got to look at the hard work of Chris Flood.”

Richard Gillespie is another local striker who is bang in form.

The former Eastleigh, AFC Totton and Bashley marksman hit his second goal in as many games as VNLS new boys Poole Town saw off Bishop’s Stortford 1-0 at Tatnam.

Gillespie, who boasts a wealth of Conference South experience with Eastleigh, struck in the 12th minute, poking home after Abdulai Baggie’s mis-kick.

He said afterwards: "It’s a more enjoyable level of football for me because it’s more competitive and you are playing against better players.”

Gosport are Dartford-bound on Tuesday, while Poole visit Weston-super-Mare.
