England captain Alex Danson scored her 100th international goal - but could not prevent her side falling to a penalty shoot-out defeat to Holland.
England trailed 2-0 at the break thanks to Dutch goals from Laura Nunnink and Laurien Leurink at the Olympic Park.
But Hampshire star Danson - a Southampton-born former Trojans youth player - broke through a packed defence to fire home her landmark goal before Sophie Bray equalised for the hosts with six minutes remaining.
The Dutch, who had lost a penalty shoot-out to Great Britain in the Olympic final in Rio last year, kept their cool this time to secure victory.
In a see-saw shoot-out against England, Holland eventually won 4-3 after Nicola White's stroke was saved.
