AFC STONEHAM are running into imperious form at the business end of the Sydenhams Division One season.

Tim Cole’s men made it eight league and cup wins on the bounce with a dominant 2-0 win over Tadley Calleva at Barlows Park.

Will Harris bagged both goals in freezing conditions as the peppedup Purples built on the feel-good factor of Tuesday’s 3-1 Russell Cotes Cup giant-killing of Southern League outfit AFC Totton.

Stoneham made a positive start and got the breakthrough on 29 minutes when man-of-the-match Jack Brady swung the ball in to the back post where Harris was waiting to head home.

The Purples doubled their lead five minutes later when a fizzing, low corner evaded everyone before falling to the unmarked Harris to tap in his 20th goal of the season.

The second half was a more low-key affair until, on 85 minutes, referee Sam Bowen awarded Tadley a penalty following some tussling in the box.

Paul Coventry stepped up to the spot, but Stoneham goalkeeper Scott Williams got down to save.

The win boosts Stoneham to third in the table, four points behind leaders Andover New Street with a game in hand.

Next up for the Purples is Saturday’s (3pm) home game against Ringwood Town at The HP Arena.

Sandwiched between Andover NS and Stoneham are secondplaced Christchurch who had a Max Wilcock hat-trick to thank for their 3-1 win at Downton.

Delighted Priory boss Ollie Cherrett tweeted: “Another good day... big 3 points on the road.

Proud of all my players finding a way to win. Big few weeks ahead..”

Priory - who have lost just one league game all season - are a point off top spot with four games in hand over Andover NS.

Seventh-placed Romsey Town, who were without a fixture on Saturday, are due to host US Portsmouth at The Bypass Ground tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

Last time out they missed a handful of chances in a slender 1-0 defeat at Christchurch and manager Andy Samuels said: “We were disciplined, organised and hard to break down at Christchurch and we created chances.

“But it’s the business end of the season now and we need to be more clinical in front of goal.

"It's going to be a tense, nervous end to the season and we're very much in the mix."

*The Russell Cotes Cup final between Andover Town and AFC Stoneham is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1 (7.45pm) at Andover’s Portway Stadium.
