HAMPSHIRE are hoping home advantage helps end a run of five successive semi-final defeats against Yorkshire tomorrow.

Since completing the limited-overs double in 2012, Hampshire have lost four T20 semi-finals in five years, as well as losing to Glamorgan at The Ageas Bowl in their last List A last-four tie in September 2013.

Hampshire are without Tom Alsop, Rilee Rossouw’s opening partner since Hashim Amla’s departure, with a hamstring injury.

But he should be fit for the floodlit Specsavers County Championship match that starts against the same opponents tomorrow and Hampshire have the ideal replacement in Sam Northeast, whose recovery from a fractured finger is perfectly timed.

Northeast returns after several weeks out, his finger having had to be pinned after being broken during a training session, and has the added incentive of knowing Kent, his former county, await the winners at Lord's on June 30.

But Mason Crane is unavailable. As revealed in Saturday’s Daily Echo, the leg-spinner sustained what the club have described as ‘soreness in his back’, during the 2nd XI’s T20 double header at Newclose on Friday, following his recent stress fracture.

Frustratingly, Brad Taylor is also injured again, but Liam Dawson was back for Hampshire’s last group game so there will at least be a recognised spinner at James Vince’s disposal.

It just means that Hampshire are forced into making two changes to their attack, having fielded three spinners against Somerset 12 days ago.

Reece Topley is likely to take one of those berths and all-rounder Ian Holland is available to take the other for what would be his first match of the season, having undergone shoulder surgery in November.

As well as the double loss to their spin attack, of some concern to Hampshire is a slight check to their momentum, following two defeats in their last four group games, both of which were at The Ageas Bowl.

They both went to the final ball.

The one-run loss to Kent three weeks ago, when Joe Weatherley finished on 105 not out, was followed by the failure to defend 356-9 against Somerset, for whom Craig Overton held his nerve to ensure the visitors reached their target.

In contrast, Yorkshire have qualified for the semi-finals by winning their last five One-Day Cup matches, having lost two of their first three group games, including Thursday’s come-from-behind quarter-final victory over Essex at Chelmsford.

They will again be without England quintet Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, David Willey, Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett today.

But Che Pujara is an almost certain starter following Test duty with India.

And rather than wallowing in the disappointment of losing a raft of internationals, the Tykes are using it as added motivation as they bid to reach a Lord’s final for the first time since 2002, when they beat Somerset to win the C&G Trophy.

“We’re full of confidence and have nothing to fear going down to Hampshire,” said captain Andrew Gale. “We’re massive underdogs. We know we’re up against it because they’re a good team on their home patch. But we just want to be brave and see where it takes us’.
