JAMES Vince has been called into England’s squad for Tuesday’s deciding one-day international against India to allow Dawid Malan to play for the Lions.

The Hampshire batsman will be at Headingley as a replacement for Malan, who along with Sam Curran has been released to take part in the Lions’ four-day game against India A.

The Lions team, which includes Test opener Alastair Cook and seamer Chris Woakes, will be skippered by Surrey opener Rory Burns for the match at New Road from Monday.

Vince has not played for England in the 50-over format since October 2016.

He is not expected to add to his five caps tomorrow with Malan yet to play an ODI.

But he is expected to be back for Hampshire’s next Vitality Blast match, against Middlesex at The Ageas Bowl on Friday, when Malan may well be captaining the visitors.

Hampshire will be aiming to bounce back from three successive losses after two in as many days against Sussex and Kent.

Middlesex play Somerset at Lord’s on Thursday.

They have also suffered successive defeats, against Essex and Gloucestershire, after winning their opener against Surrey at Lord’s

After being dismissed for a golden duck in Hampshire’s three-run defeat at Beckenham on Friday night, former Kent captain Sam Northeast said: “It was a great game of cricket, a good pitch and fast outfield – a real bowler’s nightmare and we did superbly to get as close as we did.

“After losing three wickets in two overs at the start we probably thought the game was dead then, but Tom Alsop (41) played an unbelievable knock hitting the ball as cleanly as I’ve seen him. Then Liam Dawson (75no) showed all his class to keep us in with a chance, but it was always going to be tough with Mitch Claydon bowling the last over.

“To be fair, we haven’t played great cricket in this format so far, that was a bit more like it.

“But we just didn’t quite finish the job off.”
