Saints are chasing the signing of Cameroon defender Lucien Mettomo.

George Burley has been after another centre half for some time and the 30-year-old seemingly fits the bill.

Mettomo is currently a free agent after leaving Lucerne at the end of last season.

He has played 29 times for his country and had two years at Manchester City from 2001-2003 where he helped them to promotion to the Premiership.

Mettomo spent a week on trial at Saints and that has convinced the club to make a move for him after Norwich recently turned down the chance to sign him fearing a lack of match fitness.

Mettomo has also played for Saint Etienne and Kaiserlautern as well as being in the Cameroon squad for the World Cup in 2002 and the African Nations Cup in 2004.
