Saints are chasing the signing of Cameroon defender Lucien Mettomo.
The 30-year-old is in talks over a short-term contract as George Burley aims to ease his centre-half troubles.
Burley has seen both Claus Lundekvam and Darren Powell injured this season and has been keen to strengthen that area of the team.
Mettomo is currently a free agent after leaving Lucerne at the end of last season and could be just the man for the job after he impressed on a trial last week.
Burley said: "He had a trial with us and we are looking to bring him in on a short-term basis.
"He is an experienced centre half and with Claus having an operation and Darren Powell out it's something we've been lacking.
"Chris Makin has come in and done a good job but he's not a natural centre half so we are looking at him on a short-term basis to see how he progresses.
"He's on a free transfer and looking for a club.
"Maybe he's not fully fit but that will come and we are trying to get something sorted out."
