SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell insisted he would not be getting carried away following the Shrimpers’ 3-0 win against Southampton under 21s at Roots Hall.

First half goals from Harry Bunn, Harry Kyprianou and Elvis Bwomono saw Blues make it past the group stage of the Checkatrade Trophy.

But, despite being pleased with the victory, Powell was also keen for his side to keep their feet on the ground.

“We have to make we don’t go too overboard because that was a very young Southampton side we were up against,” said Powell.

“But we still had to perform to win the game and that’s what we did.

“That’s the pleasing thing and it was a night for a lot of firsts.

“Elvis got his first goal which was great, Nathan Bishop got his first senior clean sheet and young Charlie Kelman came on for his first game too so it was pleasing.

“It’s nice to have got some momentum.”

Blues will now be looking to build on the win when they host Blackpool in League One on Saturday.
