STUART Armstrong is expected to keep his place against Fulham after his outstanding performances for Scotland over the last week.

The Saints midfielder is yet to play a full 90 minutes in the Premier League after his summer move from Celtic.

But he started his second league match for Saints in the 1-1 draw against Watford, playing 74 minutes, before starring for the Scots during the international break.

Armstrong impressed in a 4-0 win in Albania last Saturday but was particularly outstanding in Tuesday’s 3-2 win against Israel that ensured Scotland won their UEFA Nations League group.

“I watched the game and I thought he had a really positive influence on the game,” said Saints boss Mark Hughes.

“Against Israel, Stuart was prepared to get on the ball, create things and take risks at the top end of the pitch which played a part in Israel’s downfall.

“That encouraged his teammates to do the same and he took the leading hand in that which is encouraging.

“He came back into the team lately for ourselves and has shown good intent in his work and I think that has been followed up with his performances at international level.

“He did plateau a little bit at the beginning when he was trying to get a foothold into the team and into the Premier League, but now he looks assured and confident which is a key thing for Stuart.

“He needs to be confident about his form but I think he’s showing good signs in that regard which we will benefit from as Scotland did last week.”
