PIERRE Emile-Hojbjerg hopes Saints can use their first Premier League win against a top-six side since he signed for the club as a “a springboard”.

You have to go back to the end of the 2015/16 season, when Saints qualified for the Europa League, for the last time they beat one of English football’s elite clubs.

Saints won their last four games under Ronald Koeman in May 2016, including a 4-2 St Mary’s victory against Manchester City and a 2-1 win at Tottenham

Hojbjerg, who signed after Koeman’s exit two months later, is relishing the prospect of what could be achieved under Ralph Hasenhuttl after the club’s first win in 30 matches against top-six opposition.

The Danish midfielder capped an excellent performance with a crucial pass in the build-up to the winning goal as Saints won at St Mary’s for the first time this season.

Now he is hoping it is the start of an exciting period as Saints prepare for a six-pointer away to a Huddersfield side that has lost its last four matches.

“Hopefully we can use this as a springboard,” he told southamptonfc.com.

“We have to stay focused and realistic but use the confidence from the positive moments from this game because we played very well.

“We scored three goals against one of the best teams in the league so it’s a really big result.

“We cannot get carried away, we have to stay strong and keep building and it all starts again in training.

“We need to take the confidence with us and believe we can win the next game as well.”

Climbing out of the relegation zone, albeit on goal difference, gives Saints a huge psychological boost.

“I’m proud and honoured to be a part of this game,” continued Hojbjerg.

“A win at home against Arsenal with the difficulties of the relegation zone, and to produce a result like this, it is a big boost to get out.

“We really felt the fans’ support.

“I have to be honest, through the whole season they have always been there and we, the players, feel that and we want to fight for that.

“Most importantly we want to fight for the club and take it to the next level.”
