WINCHESTER Hockey Club's under-16 boys' indoor team are walking tall as regional champions.

It follows success at Canterbury in the South Regional Indoor Finals.

Winchester started impressively, recording a comfortable 7-0 win over Wycombe in their opening match.

They then beat the hosts and strong indoor club Canterbury 2-0 and Marlow 5-1, before slugging out a shaky 1-1 draw against local rivals Trojans, despite controlling the game and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Winchester then dusted themselves off to dispatch Premier League club and possible favourites Surbiton 2-1 to qualify top of their group and take their place in the last four.

Next up in the semi-final were a very physical Amersham and Chalfont side.

The boys were not unnerved by the opposition's tactics and completely controlled the game to win 4-0.

At the end of a long day, Winchester faced Premier League club Seven Oaks in the final.

After a tense few minutes at the beginning of the match, the Winch boys slowly took control of the game to open up a 5-1 lead.

The game finished 5-3, ensuring Winchester were crowned South Indoor Champions.

The boys will now travel to Wolverhampton on January 19 to represent the South of England in the National finals.

The triumphant Winchester team consisted of Rory Penrose, Tom Henley, Giles Hocking, Matt Duncombe, Alex Georgiou, Will Whitmore, Ollie Lander and Will Evans.
