Ralph Hasenhuttl has given his thoughts ahead of Sunday’s game against Manchester City.

Saints’ boss discussed what he learned from last night’s loss to West Ham, the latest team news from inside the camp, having less time to prepare for City, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s return from suspension and what he thinks about Pep Guardiola.

1. Learning more about the squad in defeat:

“In moments of defeat you always learn more about the character and mentality of your players.

“It’s part of our job as managers to analyse these parts of the game because of what you see on the pitch.

“I saw many moments when we passed too early and slowed down the game like before I came here and that’s stuff I don’t want to see and I’ll show them that today.

“We showed at the start what we can do but the more tired we got, the less speed we had.”

2. Having less time to prepare for Sunday’s match:

“It’s different for sure.

“You can watch something in training and then decide if you like it, and if you don’t, you have the chance to change it.

“Against Man City, we won’t be able to do that.”

3. Team news:

Daily Echo:

Michael Obafemi

“Michael Obafemi it really hurts he is not part of the squad at the moment. The injury in training was a pity because I need him and his speed.

“That’s what I expected from Shane Long and it was not really the same what he put on the pitch and I hope for more in the future. Maybe one or the other is coming back.

“Mario Lemina also is not 100 per cent in shape and he has problems. There is a possibility to rotate and bring in a few young players.”

4. Pep Guardiola:

“I have a lot of respect for Pep. He is a fantastic human, a fanatic guy and a hard work character. He has a clear philosophy and makes every player a different player.

“We maybe have a different style, he is all about ball possession and my philosophy against the ball is more important.

“I like his enthusiasm and his clear mind in what he likes to play and there are not managers with these points per games in their life.”

5. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg:

Daily Echo:

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

“I think Pierre is a very intelligent player, and in our philosophy and shape, it is very important to have an open mind and quick mind.

“He’s a player whom is very important for me in the moment in the position number six.

“He can read the game well, is good at winning the ball and the last ball at front he made the assist for 3-2 against Arsenal and the 1-0 against Arsenal.

“They were good passes in front and he switches quick from playing side to back to front and I appreciate that when I saw it so he’s very important for me.”
