Ten-men Saints managed to get the better of Claude Puel’s Leicester side in a 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium.

Here are five things we learned:

1. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s faith paid off:

Shane Long celebrates his goal at Leicester

Before the game, Hasenhuttl had thrown his support behind Shane Long and called on him to lead the line with Danny Ings, Charlie Austin and Michael Obafemi all out.

And Long rose to the challenge to score the crucial on the verge of half time to take the game out of Leicester’s reach.

His last four goals for Saints have come under four different managers, but given what’s at stake, this will be one of the sweetest.

2. James Ward-Prowse has adapted his game:

Ward-Prowse after lashing in his penalty

Having been left out of the matchday squad for the Huddersfield win, Ward-Prowse has bounced back with a purpose.

He was back in the team for the Man City defeat and has kept hold of his place since. The midfielder has become more physical on the pitch and it’s paying off.

Ward-Prowse also bagged the penalty to send Saints on their way to a win at the King Power Stadium.

3. Yan Valery has a lot of learning to do:

Daily Echo:

Yan Valery exits the pitch after being given his marching orders

Valery picked up two needless bookings to get himself sent off.

It’s not the first time the 19-year-old has made life difficult for himself in the first half of games either.

He was booked at Cardiff and Huddersfield early on, with him being hooked off at half time in the former.

And had Saints not come away with the win yesterday, a lot of that would have been down to Valery’s naivety, but he’s still young and he should come back stronger.

4. Alex McCarthy is Hasenhuttl’s number one:

Alex McCarthy

In the build-up to the Leicester win Hasenhuttl revealed the goalkeeper he picked would be his number one going forward.

That was expected to be Angus Gunn, but the Austrian surprised everyone by opting to go with McCarthy.

And McCarthy didn’t let Hasenhuttl down on his return to the squad with a number of good saves.

5. Saints ended their barren run against Puel:

Former Saints boss Claude Puel at the final whistle yesterday

It’s taken a while, but Saints have finally won against former manager Puel.

The Frenchman seemingly had his former club’s number after going unbeaten against them since his departure in 2017.

However, Ward-Prowse and Long crushed that record with their first half goals.
