Saints could make a deadline day transfer swoop – but Ralph Hasenhuttl has insisted he is happy to continue with what he’s got for the rest of the season.

The chances remain against Saints being able to get a deal over the line before the window closes tonight.

However, Hasenhuttl hasn’t given up hope entirely of getting one fresh face in.

Saints have had an interest in Birmingham striker Che Adams, but that deal looks tough with the Blues determined to hold on to their star man.

The departure of Cedric Soares has also seen Saints linked with right backs Joakim Maehle and Omar Elabdellaoui.

Maehle looks like a difficult deal to do in this transfer window, while Olympiakos’ 27-year-old Norway international Elabdellaoui is rated at around £4.5m.

Hasenhuttl said: “I don’t know what will happen.

“It can be that someone is coming in and if not I tell you that I don’t want to take a transfer that doesn’t fit 100 per cent to us.

“Maybe in the summer then we maybe do something else, but with this squad to go for the next three months until May is not a problem.”

When asked specifically about Elabdellaoui, he replied: “I don’t want to speak about any names.

“We have a day to go and it can be that someone is coming in.”

The focus for Saints during the January transfer window has been getting players out of the door.

All eyes will be on whether Charlie Austin departs St Mary’s on deadline day.

Saints are prepared to sell the striker if the right offer comes in, with Stoke and Blackburn both linked with the 29-year-old, but whether a deal that suits all parties arises remains to be seen.

“I will have a look tomorrow,” said Hasenhuttl.

“I think he knows that he is a player we also need if he is here.

“If comes a situation he wants to take another decision we speak about that.”

If Hasenhuttl does have to go with what he’s got, then James Ward-Prowse again proved his ability to stand in at right back if needed.

He switched there against Crystal Palace last night and popped up with his third goal in three Premier League games to earn Saints a point.

“The interesting thing was he scored from the full back position after we switched the shape,” reflected Hasenhuttl.

“We demand them to be always in an attacking situation in the box to create a high number of players if he has the chance in the moment and it is absolutely fantastic for taking this chance with both hands.

“It is good for us and good for him.”
