Saints boosted their hopes of staying in the Championship with this win.
An 11th-minute David McGoldrick penalty, after Mark Kennedy’s arm blocked a Jason Euell cross, proved to be the winner against a Cardiff side on the fringes of the play offs.
Kelvin Davis secured the second of three successive wins for Mark Wotte’s Saints, with two outstanding saves.
But Saints remained third from bottom, three points off safety, and only managed one more before they were relegated to League One.

Claus Lundekvam gave Saints the lead at the beginning of a dramatic second half with the second and final goal of his 12-year career at the club.
Lundekvam’s near-post header from Jim Brennan’s corner came against a Cardiff side managed by Dave Jones, his former manager at The Dell.
Ironically, Jones was also in charge of Wolves when Lundekvam scored the only other goal of his Saints career at Molineux two years earlier.
“You score two ******g goals in your whole career and you score them both against me!” laughed Jones after a defeat that boosted Saints’ Championship survival hopes while denting the Welsh club’s play-off ambitions. “It was nothing personal,” smiled Lundekvam
After a Cameron Jerome equaliser, Ricardo Fuller scored twice. He cut in from the right before finding the bottom corner with his left foot to give Saints a 70th-minute lead. Five minutes later, he hooked home another following a Jermaine Wright corner.
“I’ve never had justice here so I had nothing to lose,” he said afterwards. “I’ve endured low confidence and have taken a lot of stick.” Fuller signed for Stoke City a few months later.

Leading 3-0 from the first leg after two goals from Matt Le Tissier - including a sublime dribble and chip, and another from Neil Shipperley, Saints clinched a 5-1 aggregate success at the Dell in the second round of the Coca Cola Cup.
Cardiff took the lead on the night but Gordon Watson glanced in a Le Tissier corner to equalise in the 53rd minute. Richard Hall headed in another Le Tissier flag-kick in injury time.
Saints beat West Ham in the next round but were then knocked out by Reading.

This Boxing Day win was the first of three victories in six days during an eight-match unbeaten run that helped Saints gain promotion back to the top flight.
Ted MacDougall scored in the first minute after Phil Boyer’s shot was blocked. Boyer doubled the lead in the 34th, beating three defenders before firing in a low shot which squeezed through the goalkeeper’s hands.
Alan Ball’s low shot made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half before Cardiff netted a late consolation.
Saints won 3-1 at Charlton 24 hours later. Boyer scored his third goal in as many games on New Year’s Eve.

Ted MacDougall also opened the scoring in this division two win, a 30th-minute header from Peter Osgood’s assist.
Then Mick Channon scored twice in ten minutes. He doubled the lead with a header from a MacDougall cross – the 150th of his 228 Saints goals – before nodding in another MacDougall assist just past the hour. Cardiff soon pulled one back before adding another in injury time.
