Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looks ahead

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side flew to the Canary Island yesterday on the back of their 2-1 defeat to Cardiff.

Hojbjerg said: “Tenerife, or Staplewood, it doesn’t matter. 

“It depends on the result in two weeks as to how the break turns out. 

“What’s most important is that we are going to work on it.

“We are going to look each other in the eye and say, ‘Listen, we are here to create something’, and that’s what we are going to do.

“We are going to work hard, we are going to work serious and we are going to work well towards what we want to achieve and that is to stay in the Premier League.

“We have to climb the table and we have the quality to do that, but the most important thing is to keep together and still believe.

“We, as players, have to take responsibility.

“But next time we will come back harder and win the things that we have to win.

“We need to keep building what we have been trying to build.”

The defeat to Cardiff saw the end of Saints’ five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl’s side had not lost in the league since the turn of the year, a run that included draws at Chelsea and Burnley and wins against Leicester and Everton.

Before the last three games, there was an expectation that Saints would pick up at least five points, possibly seven.

However, they only managed two from Crystal Palace, Burnley and Cardiff.

“It’s a big blow in terms of points,” added Hojbjerg. 

“We could have gone five points ahead or kept them [Cardiff] two points behind, but now we’ve let them back in.

“It’s difficult to find words for it because we prepared really well for the game. 

“For most of the game, we did what we had to do and then we came back.

“But then to let it slip is unacceptable.”

Despite the slip-up, Hojbjerg is staying positive.

“The fans know what it’s all about and we know what it’s all about,” he continued.

“The most important thing is to stay together and to be on the same page. 

“We need to move forward in the same direction, which is what we’ve been doing, and we will keep doing it. 

“Small bumps can’t make you draw conclusions, you have got to believe and work on it.”
