FORMER Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg thinks Saints should have had two penalties at Old Trafford.

Stuart Attwell was the match official during the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday and twice waved away Ryan Bertrand’s penalty appeals.

United’s Chris Smalling appeared to be holding Bertrand’s shirt inside the box which caused him to go down.

Discussing this decision in the Daily Mail, Clattenburg said: “Penalty.

“This should’ve resulted in a spot kick, but it was difficult one for referee Stuart Attwell.

“The holding of Bertrand’s shirt by Smalling happened on the blind side of the official.

“The best angle to see the offence would have been from behind the goal.”

Bertrand continued to be a thorn in United's side throughout the match and went down once again inside the area.

This time, Ashley Young was the culprit.

Bertrand had managed to get himself in front of the defender, only for Young to stick out his arm which sent the Saints man down to the floor.

However, Attwell ignored the appeal and waved play on.

Clattenburg added: “Southampton can feel wronged because they should also have been awarded a penalty for this one.

“Bertrand ran across Young and the Manchester United defender grabbed the wrist (of Bertrand), pulling him down.

“Attwell missed it and allowed play to continue.”
