STUART Armstrong played the full 90 minutes as Scotland suffered one their most humiliating defeats.

The Saints midfielder was denied a consolation goal by a brilliant save from goalkeeper Dmytro Nephodov as Scotland were beaten 3-0 away to Kazakhstan.

Scotland were 2-0 down inside ten minutes of the Euro 2020 qualifier and manager Alex McLeish did not hold back during his analysis of the defeat.

He said: "It was horrible. We started bright, we made some penetrating runs in the early minutes but then they hit us with two blockbusters.

"It was disappointing not to see a great reaction from that. But at half-time we tried to change it a wee bit, change the system to see if we could unsettle Kazakhstan a little bit, but they were first to second balls and were very sharp on the night.

"It was an extremely important game. It's the first game, so we know that there are other games. It's a sore one. The facts are that we were beaten by a team ranked lower than us. On paper, we should win but I think you have to give Kazakhstan a bit of credit for the way they played."

Scotland are away to San Marino on Sunday.
