LEEDS United star Kalvin Phillips is a Saints transfer target, according to the Sun.

But the midfielder will only be available if Leeds fail to gain promotion back to the Premier League – and Saints would be expected to pay £20m.

The 23 year-old was born in Leeds and made his hometown club four years ago, but has thrived under the management of Marcelo Bielsa this season.

Affectionately known by Leeds fans as the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’,he was named in Sky Sports’ Championship team of the season.

Phillips was outstanding in the 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, which leaves Leeds in second place, three points above the play-off positions with four games left.

But Saints are not  interested in bringing Scott Arfield to St Mary’s, despite reports in the national press.

The £3m-rated Rangers midfielder has been linked with Saints after some outstanding performances for Steven Gerrard’s side this season and,

At the age of 30, he is at the peak of his career.

But Arfield is under contract to Rangers until 2022 and Saints are not pursuing a player who turned down a move to St Mary's in 2010.

The former Burnley man rejected the chance to move from Falkirk because he did not believe he could live up to the £500,000 fee.
