SAINTS have only won one of their last 14 matches away to Newcastle, a run of games that includes 11 defeats.

But last season’s 3-0 defeat was their first loss there in four visits and they have had some memorable wins at St James’ Park, the stage for Saturday’s match against Rafa Benitez’s side.

Eljero Elia scored a goal in each half in his second appearance after joining on loan from Werder Bremen.
The Dutch winger gave Saints a 14th-minute lead following a fine team move.
Jose Fonte chipped a ball into Graziano Pelle, who held off a Newcastle challenge and chested the ball into James Ward-Prowse. From Ward-Prowse’s pass, Elia produced a first-time shot across goal that went under Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.
Newcastle grabbed a deserved equaliser before half-time as a deflected pass ricocheted into the Saints area. Fraser Forster wasn’t ideally placed to come for the ball but tried, only for Florin Gardos to slide across him and fire the ball against the shin of Yoan Gouffran, who watched with delight as it rebounded into the empty net from 12 yards.
Saints regained the lead on 62 minutes when substitute Shane Long rose magnificently to win a flick-on that set Elia on his way. He held off Daryl Janmaat, off whom Elia’s shot deflected into the net via the inside of the post. Pelle hit the bar before Saints held on in a frantic finish.

Not for the first time, Matt Le Tissier made the decisive contribution at St James’ Park, scoring the only goal in the 55th minute.
Saints’ number seven ghosted behind the Newcastle defence following Ulrich van Gobbel’s long clearance before hitting a low left-footed shot into the bottom left corner. It was a crucial win but not as crucial as Saints’ two away wins the following month. They stayed up by a point after winning 3-1 at Nottingham Forest and 1-0 at Sunderland, two clubs that were relegated the following month.

Matt Le Tissier scored one of his many wonder goals to win Saints’ first match under the late, great Alan Ball.
Following the sacking of Ian Branfoot at the start of the year, Saints had suffered an FA Cup third-round upset at Port Vale.
But they responded with this marvellous win that set the tone for Bally’s memorable 18 months in charge. Neil Maddison charged through a crowd of players to head home the fifth-minute opener from a Le Tissier corner on his return to the north-east. After evading Ken Monkou with a cute first touch, Andy Cole equalised in typically clinical fashion to reach 30 goals for Newcastle quicker than any other player.
But Le Tissier responded with a stunning free-kick against a Newcastle side that would finish third place in their first season after promotion under Kevin Keegan.

Mick Channon scored the decisive goal, a 31st-minute penalty after a handball by Bob Moncur.
This was Saints’ second game and first win under Lawrie McMenemy, who had replaced Ted Bates with the moniker manager-designate.
But Saints managed only two more away wins all season, the last coming on the final day, as they became the first team to be relegated after finishing third from bottom of division one.

There was snow on the ground for this division two encounter, but it did not stop Derek Roper from giving Saints a third-minute lead with a header.
Newcastle soon scored a controversial equaliser after the referee failed to spot a handball. But Eric Day restored Saints’ advantage midway through the second half after Jack Bradley and George Lewis had created the opportunity. Bill Stroud fired the third to make sure of the points for Bill Dodgin’s side in the 82nd minute.
