Dusan Tadic was at his imperious best with two goals in a virtuoso performance that helped Saints to a vital win on the same weekend last year.

Saints remained in the bottom three but this result took them to within a point of Swansea, who they beat ten days later to effectively secure their Premier League status.

Tadic gave Saints the lead after a counter-attack from Nathan Redmond and Mario Lemina set up a one-on-one that the Serb finished into the far corner.

Josh King equalised just before half-time following Cherries Steve Cook’s header from a corner.

Tadic’s 54th-minute winner was a fine left-footed, toe-poked finish across Begovic.

SAINTS: McCarthy, Hoedt, Bednarek, Yoshida, Lemina, Bertrand, Soares, Romeu, Tadic (Ward-Prowse 87), Austin (Hojbjerg 72), Redmond (Long 59).

CHERRIES: Begovic, Ake, S Cook, Francis, L Cook, Fraser, Gosling (Surman 72), Daniels, Wilson (Ibe 64), King, Mousset (Defoe 64).

RICKIE Lambert kept his cool amid the heat of a controversial derby to give Saints their first League One win of the season at St Mary’s in the first league meeting between the clubs for more than 50 years.

Lambert ended a run of seven games without a goal by converting two penalties, after 18 and 55 minutes.

Cherries, however, were furious.

Boss Eddie Howe claimed referee Kevin Wright gave all the big decisions against his side, while Cherries midfielder Marvin Bartley, who brought down Morgan Schneiderlin for the second penalty, rated Wright’s performance as “zero out of 10.”

SAINTS: Davis, Harding, Fonte, Butterfield, Seaborne, Schneiderlin, Puncheon, Hammond, Lallana (Oxlade-Chamberlain 69), Lambert (Do Prado 84), Barnard (Chaplow 80).

BOURNEMOUTH: Jalal, Garry, Pearce, Smith (sent off 87), Wiggins, Bartley (Hollands 61), Pugh, Robinson, Feeney (Cooper 46), McQuoid, Symes (Fletcher 68).

Brian Clifton scored twice in this seven-goal thriller during the division three championship-winning season.

The forward was spotted playing for Whitchurch and gave Saints a 15th minute lead from Terry Paine’s accurate pass, only for Ray Bumstead to equalise with the aid of a deflection a minute later. George O’Brien soon restored Saints’ lead after Derek Reeves’ effort was saved. Bournemouth equalised before the break, but Clifton rose high to head in a John Sydenham corner in the 55th minute before Reeves made it 4-2 in the 78th after another excellent Paine pass.

SAINTS: Charles, Davies, Traynor, Conner, page, Huxford, Paine, O’Brien, Reeves, Clifton, Sydenham.

This was Saints’ biggest win for 57 years and the 8-0 victory against Sunderland in October 2014 is the only one that surpasses it.

Brian Clifton, who made his debut a month earlier, Johnny Walker and John Hoskins scored two goals apiece.

Clifton fired Saints into a 2-0 lead with goals in the seventh and 48th minutes and a brilliant run by Hoskins set up the third for Reeves two minutes later.

Reeves turned provider for Walker and just past the hour Hoskins scored twice in 60 seconds as Saints made it five in 15 minutes.

Walker completed the rout in the 85th minute courtesy of another Reeves assist.

Saints finished the season sixth in division three south.

SAINTS: Stevens, Wilkins, Traynor, McLoughlin, Parker, Page Paine, Reeves, Clifton, Walker, Hoskins.

The Dell pitch was frozen and Saints went 1-0 down to a Stan Newsham goal in the 18th minute.

But Eric Day shrugged off the attentions of several defenders to equalise via the inside of a post eight minutes later and Tommy Mulgrew scored twice in the second half. Mulgrew, who scored the Dell’s fastest-ever goal on his debut 18 months earlier, gave Saints a 41st-minute lead before seizing on a mistake to score the winner just past the hour. Lew Clayton scored a late consolation.

SAINTS: Kiernan, Wilkins Traynor, McGowan, Page, McLaughlin, Flood Reeves, Day, Mulgrew, Hoskins.
