CHE Adams has compared his first week at Saints to going back to school.

The striker joined the St Mary’s outfit in a £15m five-year deal from Birmingham last Monday to become the club’s second signing of the summer.

And with his first week of pre-season behind him, Adams told the Daily Echo that the initial nerves he felt have faded away.

“I’m adapting quite well because of the lads being so helpful every day in training and the staff as well. It’s been good,” explained Adams.

“You do get anxious. It’s like starting at a new school again with people you have never met before and who have never heard of you.

“I’m hoping to get to grips with it pretty quickly. Everyone has been really good on and off the pitch in helping me settle in.”

One player who Adams will become accustomed to is fellow striker Danny Ings.

Ings completed his permanent transfer from Liverpool on the same day the ex-Birmingham forward joined.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hoping the two of them can strike up a partnership before the season starts to bolster Saints’ attack.

Ings’ season was interrupted by injuries last year, but he’s already admitted that his body has never felt better ahead of a new campaign.

When questioned whether the duo can forge a successful partnership, Adams responded: “Hopefully it can be.

“I’ve already spoken to him a little bit and he is a really good guy off the pitch. He has played in the Premier League for a few years and hopefully he can help me through.

“He hasn’t given me any advice yet, it’s just been general chat. He’s helped me off the pitch and I’m hoping he can help me on it.

“We’ve only been doing tests so far, so haven’t been able to work together on the pitch yet.”

It was a case of staying patient for Adams as Saints went in more than once to try and land the striker from Birmingham.

Hasenhuttl wanted the striker to arrive in January, but his former club rejected Saints’ offer.

Despite this, he wasn’t put off and went straight back in for Adams when the summer window opened.

And due to Hasenhuttl's determination to sign him, it gave Adams a confidence boost.

Adams added: “That means that they want you and that they are chasing your autograph.

“It is something special to feel wanted which is really good.”
