Ralph Hasenhuttl has urged his team to stay focussed for a full 90 minutes when they take on Brighton tomorrow.

Lapses in concertation hurt Saints as they were beaten in both of their two opening matches, and the manager knows they can’t afford similar mistakes at the Amex Stadium.

“The problem is in every game there was somebody different who made a mistake,” he reflected.

“One time bad timing of a long ball and then a quick situation.

“We must take care we don’t create problems by making mistakes where it’s not necessary to, so taking too much risk of building up the game, and especially against a team like Liverpool.

“For the second goal we have our own throw-in and try to build-up and in that moment it was absolutely the wrong decision.

“If we have better game management in this part this is something we can learn and we can show them and if we show them we must see there is a development and a better decision in the future for that moment.”

He added: “Even if you make a perfect game you have the best strikers in the world against you and Sadio Mane and Firmino also scored against other fantastic centre backs.

“It’s not easy to defend them for 90 minutes and not give them chances.

“I think we did it in a good way but not good enough and this is the problem. You can play good but still get no points.

“If you stay believing in what you are doing and hard working and trying to develop your own game you will learn out of mistakes. The only real mistake is the mistake you don’t take anything out of.

“The guys are very self-critical.”

Saints head to Brighton with a clean bill of health. Alex McCarthy will be back on the bench after recovering from a minor problem.
