SAINTS Under-23s climbed off the foot of the Premier League 2 Division 1 table with a 2-1 win against Wolves.

Goals from Christian Norton and Aaron O’Driscoll ensured that Radhi Jaidi’s side weren’t threatened by a strike from Wolves’ Benny Ashley-Seal.

Manager Jaidi admitted he was thrilled with the team’s performance away from home which also saw them win for just the second time this season.

Speaking to the Southampton FC website, Jaidi said: “I’m very pleased with the performance overall.

“We started the game on the front foot, we imposed ourselves and played good football.

"There was good movement and clever combinations. Credit to the boys, they've applied the work we've done in recent weeks.

"I can't say much more than I'm proud of all of the boys. Especially the younger ones who came in and made a very positive impact.”

Saints raced into a 28th minute lead when defender Jake Vokins spotted the run of Norton at the back post.

The striker then didn’t disappoint in turning the ball home past Wolves goalkeeper Andreas Sondergaard.

Having taken the lead, Jaidi’s side then conceded it within a matter of minutes.

Ashley-Seal proved to be too hot to handle for youngster Kameron Ledwidge, before sliding his shot past Tommy Scott in goal.

Christoph Klarer came close to restoring Saints’ advantage on the verge of half time, only for his header to drift just wide of the target.

Jaidi’s team talk proved to have the desired effect as his side took the lead in the 65th minute.

Callum Slattery’s corner was met by the head of O’Driscoll, whose subtle flick was enough to see it ripple the back of the net.

Following the victory, Jaidi admitted that working with youngsters isn’t necessarily all about winning.

He added: "We have good young players at this club who need time and need an opportunity. I'm really pleased with their contribution.

"It's a long-term process, working with Academy players. The results come and go, we're working towards the future.

“We were the team who wanted the three points more and we showed our quality."
