ROSS Wilson’s departure is a “big loss” for Saints according to Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Wilson this week left his director of football operations role at St Mary’s to join Scottish giants Rangers.

Hasenhuttl said: “It was surprising for sure.

“What I can say is that I had a very good relationship with him and I liked to work with him. He is a fantastic character and a great personality. I liked to work with him. I enjoyed every minute.

“He goes to a famous club and has a new challenge, we wish him all the best. For us, it’s a big loss for sure.

“This is what happens in football and it’s important we bring somebody new in.”

The Saints boss also made it clear that Wilson’s departure won’t alter their plans for the January transfer window.

He added: “I think we have our plan and schedule about want we want to do with the players we want to look at.

“This is independent from Ross because we already know want we want to have for our game and the positions we need.”

It was reported by the Daily Echo that Saints are keen to appoint a player trading expert who will replace Wilson.

And Hasenhuttl suggested he would have his say about who should get the role.

“I think it is the main work for the board and for Martin [Semmens]. I have other things to look on and work to do, but I will have my opinion on this position,” explained the Saints boss.
