SAINTS suffered their biggest ever defeat last night, losing 9-0 to Leicester at St Mary’s.
Here are nine things we learned from the game:
1. Saints suffer their heaviest loss:
Last night’s capitulation set a new record for Saints – their worst ever defeat.
Not in their long history have they ever been beaten by a margin of nine, with the previous scoreline being 8-0.
2. Ryan Bertrand falls victim to VAR:
Defender Bertrand became the first player in Premier League history to be given a red card by the video technology.
His sending-off came after a dangerous tackle on Perez during the build-up to Leicester’s first goal.
3. Angus Gunn’s position must be in doubt:
Saints didn’t lose the match because of Gunn, but eyebrows were certainly raised at some of the goals he conceded.
With Alex McCarthy waiting in the wings, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Gunn was taken out of the firing line.
After all, does it get much worse than conceding nine?
4. Ayoze Perez continues to haunt Saints:
Perez became the first player to score back-to-back Premier League hat-tricks against the same side since Luis Suarez managed it against Norwich back in 2012.
The attacker hit three past Saints for Newcastle in April, earlier this year.
5. Things don’t get any easier for Hasenhuttl’s side:
You’d like to think Saints will bounce back in some form after last night’s thumping, but with two games against Manchester City in the pipeline, there isn’t much room for optimism.
Given City’s quality and the fact they’ve already put eight past Watford this season, things might not get better for Hasenhuttl’s side just yet.
6. Saints fans should be proud of themselves:
All of the fans who stayed for the 90 minutes deserve credit, although it was easy to see why many supporters opted to leave early.
However, those sitting in the Northam Stand continued to sing right until the final whistle, putting in more effort than the Saints team did.
7. Jamie Carragher tears into the Saints defence:
As a Champions League-winning defender, Jamie Carragher knows a thing or two about defending.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, he labelled Saints’ efforts as an “absolute disgrace”.
8. Saints’ performance against City will speak volumes:
Although no one is expecting Hasenhuttl’s team to reach the next round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, the way they respond to Friday night’s humbling is crucial.
There can be nothing less than 100 per cent from every single player.
9. Jamie Vardy had a party:
It would only be fitting that the ninth thing we learned last night was that Leicester striker Vardy was in his element, firing in the final goal of the evening from the penalty spot.
The striker’s earlier finishes were easy on the eye thanks to a couple of exquisite touches.
England boss Gareth Southgate should be calling Vardy every day asking him to come out of international retirement.
