SAINTS midfielder James Ward-Prowse is aiming to topple Matt Le Tissier’s free kick record.

After bagging one in spectacular fashion to beat Watford, the academy lad needs to net just two more to equal the Saints icon’s haul of seven.

And Ward-Prowse admitted it’s something the pair have spoken about in the past.

The 25-year-old said: “I’ve spoken to him [Le Tissier] a few times and he’s backed me to beat it, so it’s nice to have that in the back of my mind.

“But more importantly the free kick meant we won the game and that’s the most important thing above any records.”

Having beaten fellow strugglers Watford, Saints welcome Norwich to St Mary’s on Wednesday and will be targeting back-to-back home wins for the first time since March.

Ward-Prowse feels as though the outcome of the next two matches could determine what the rest of their campaign will look like.

He added: “It can be a season-changing week. Last week was a step in the right direction but these are three winnable games in a week [Watford, Norwich and Newcastle] and if you win one or two then we’re in striking distance of where we want to be.”

Although Ward-Prowse hit the winner on Saturday, it was Danny Ings who gave the St Mary’s side a glimmer of hope.

The striker has been in irresistible form, netting six goals in his last eight Premier League ties.

“He’s a great guy to have around the place,” continued Ward-Prowse.

“I think the club have always been very good at recruiting good lads, good people and he’s definitely one of them.

“He deserves all the goals he’s getting with his work rate and what he does for the team.”

Saints were at times booed by the St Mary’s crowd for playing the ball backwards.

They were also jeered off the pitch after an abject first half that saw them go a goal behind.

Ward-Prowse admitted to understanding their concerns but added that the players have to try and block it out.

The midfielder said: “We know there’s frustration but we can’t allow ourselves to think about that.

“We have to concentrate on our jobs and we did that well, especially in the second half.”
