RYAN Bertrand believes it’s an advantage that Moussa Djenepo hasn’t played bags of football since his summer arrival.

The winger’s season has been interrupted with injuries, with his most recent return coming against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

And with Tottenham arriving on the south coast for this afternoon’s clash, Bertrand is backing his teammate to star again.

Asked whether Djenepo’s lack of game time is a bonus, Bertrand said: “I think so.

“From clips, people will start to see a pattern of how we play and try to develop that but when you have a wildcard like that you can bring him on and he can unlock most doors.

“He’s very good at making that impact and coming on when we are chasing the game.

“You get your heart in your mouth a little bit but it’s brilliant. Especially when the boys have put a shift in because you have an outlet with someone who is fresh.”

Tottenham’s last visit to St Mary’s saw Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side win it in dramatic fashion when James Ward-Prowse rifled his free-kick into the top corner.

However, their most recent match together saw Spurs win at White Hart Lane despite Danny Ings’ best efforts.

Since the two teams met earlier in the season the north London side have parted company with Mauricio Pochettino and replaced him with Jose Mourinho.

And because of the exciting brand football they are still trying to play, Bertrand reckons it could work in Saints’ favour.

“I think we are a threat when we get on our game. Especially against teams that can be a bit more expansive,” reflected the left-back.

“They leave a few more gaps, so it actually suits us playing the teams who aren’t as compact.

“We have plenty to build on and take every confidence now. We have fully eradicated that fear factor and we are now playing fluid football.

“We have started dictating play and trying to create chance after chance which is something you can take full confidence from.”
