STRANGELY, in a week when we have been celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day, when we overcame the German problem, we are all later this month going to be looking to them to see if football will be able to start again.

For some reason, their prime minister has given the go-ahead and I don’t think it will just be football authorities, players and supporters watching it unfold, it will be any organisation that puts events on where there is more than one person in attendance.

Ironically, Holland, which is not that far away from Germany, has said there is no way they will be restarting football soon and I think the main decision there was one made by the players themselves.

Speaking to one of our managers recently, he said that a group of his senior players had held a meeting and said the same: even though they miss the game so much they do not want to be starting, even if it’s behind closed doors and at neutral venues because one or two players have babies in their houses and others mentioned senior citizen relatives.

They do not want to be the person who comes back home with signs of the virus – and there have already been Premier League players that have had the virus

So, what is the answer? Who knows.

Getting back to the idea of playing behind closed doors, if it’s a Premier League game there will always be staff on hand, people who must get the dressing rooms ready, at least 16 players with each club and so many more staff.

But will those not on the pitch be able to sit with each other on the benches? It just doesn’t seem right.

One or two clubs, Brighton in particular, came out strongly to oppose the idea of playing at neutral venues, even though the Amex Stadium was nominated as a ground that can be used because of its location, although they wouldn’t be able to play there.

It seems there isn’t anyone in football now who can make a decision that everyone can agree with.

I, personally, would want this season to finish whether the remaining nine games have to be at the start of the following season or whether they can be squeezed in during a two-week period

An ex-player recently said to me, ‘At one time we played Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Three games in eight days with a much smaller squad’.

The players are superbly fit now, and whether it’s at home or the training ground, they would have stayed in good condition.

When it gets back to the number of games it could be that they join it up with next season, especially as clubs play plenty of pre-season games nowadays.

They could class the remainder of this season as pre-season, although there would be more to play for because the relegation places haven’t been settled.

At the top, everyone, even Manchester City, would acknowledge that Liverpool are champions but there would still be the question of who could fill the other European places.

I think supporters would also expect the remaining games of their team to be played on their own pitch. I’m sure they would accept the fact that no one knows when that would happen, whether it’s in the next month or later down the line.

I think neutral grounds are out of the question if, for instance, you take Saints as an example: we’ve already played away at Man City, one of the hardest fixtures in the league, and we were robbed - more or less - of a draw in the final minutes.

Everyone from the management, players and supporters who were there that day would be looking forward to the home game.

It would be without a crowd but at least it would be on our own ground.

I think it’s definitely a wait and see situation, not just for football, but for life in general.

TALKING about supporters, one of the most passionate in our area is the legendary Mike Osman who I have known for decades now.

Over the years I’ve gone to many functions he has put on to help minor football clubs in our area, but he has made his living as being a top impressionist and is listed, at present, as being the best Boris Johnson and Donald Trump impersonator in the country.

Similar to football, he has had to cancel lots of events that he was lined up to do but, me not knowing too much about iPads, I was very interested to hear that he has now joined up with some other celebrities, where they are doing personal messages for people all over the world.

These can be for birthdays, get well soon messages and happy anniversaries etc.

The ones he loves to do are when the person he’s sending the message to hates Boris or Donald and the friend wants to wind them up.

But imagine if someone in your family told you to click on something and then a world-famous politician is looking at you, knowing your name and wishing you well.
