DANNY Ings scored in his 19th Premier League game of the season and missed a penalty in Saints’ 2-0 win at Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium.

His goal took him past James Beattie’s record of scoring in 18 top-flight matches back in 2002/03.

But the striker’s missed penalty means Saints have now squandered three of their four spot-kicks this season, which is just one shy of Manchester City and Manchester United.

A late Bournemouth goal from Sam Surridge was overturned by VAR after Callum Wilson was in an offside position.

But Che Adams was on hand in the final few seconds to rifle home from close range to leave the Cherries in the relegation zone.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made five changes for his side’s trip to the Vitality Stadium.

Kyle Walker-Peters, Ryan Bertrand, Jack Stephens, Stuart Armstrong and Shane Long were all given spots in the starting XI.

This meant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jake Vokins, Will Smallbone and Michael Obafemi dropped down to the bench.

Jan Bednarek was unable to make the matchday squad after picking up a late knock ahead of the tie.

Saints started quickly and won a corner in the first minute, but it was Bournemouth who had the first shot on goal.

Defender Diego Rico’s audacious strike, however, failed to cause Alex McCarthy any issues.

The home side continued to hold the upper hand and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 10th minute when his deflected shot went just wide of the post.

Saints had to stay patient to register their first chance and it’s one they should have scored.

Oriol Romeu’s ball into the box gifted James Ward-Prowse a free header but the St Mary’s skipper could only direct it straight at Aaron Ramsdale in the Bournemouth net.

Josh King’s run down the right resulted in a dangerous cross zipping across the face of goal and Walker-Peters had to be alert to the situation to clear away the danger.

Nathan Redmond hit one on the half volley in the 39th minute which was comfortably saved by Cherries goalkeeper Ramsdale.

But Hasenhuttl’s side didn’t have to wait much longer to break the deadlock thanks to Ings’ 21st Premier League goal of the season.

Saints’ star man picked the ball up on the left side of the box, shifted inside, shook off a Cherries defender and proceeded to plant it into the bottom corner.

As soon as he’d created himself some space there was only going to be one outcome which involved Ramsdale being beaten.

Ings started the second half in the same fashion as he ended the first one.

He picked the ball up in the 47th minute, surged forward, created himself some space and then went in search of the bottom corner.

However, it didn't have enough bend on it to sneak past Ramsdale's post.

Saints continued to threaten and Ward-Prowse’s left-footed strike forced Cherries’ shot-stopper into another save.

The visitors were then awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after a lengthy VAR check confirmed Harry Wilson handled Romeu’s header.

Ings stepped up, stuttered his run, only to have his tame effort denied by Ramsdale who guessed the right way.

Liverpool loanee Wilson thought he’d equalised for the Cherries in the 66th minute after Vestergaard’s failed clearance fell to him inside the box.

But the youngster snatched at it and was denied by a solid McCarthy stop.

In desperate need of an equaliser, Eddie Howe’s men came agonisingly close to securing one with just under 15 minutes remaining.

Second-half substitute Dominic Solanke took the ball past Saints’ goalkeeper, but McCarthy was able to recover and block his shot.

Redmond had a golden opportunity to seal the win in the 82nd minute after an incisive pass from Adams.

It left Saints’ winger with the time and space to beat Ramsdale, only for the Cherries goalkeeper to match the shot with a brilliant save.

As the clock ticked down Bournemouth continued to put the visitors under pressure and should have equalised in the 86th minute.

Dominic Solanke looked set to net a late goal, only for Vestergaard to produce a magnificent block, sending the ball out for a corner.

McCarthy was again called into action in the 90th minute and pulled a save out of the top drawer to tip Wilson’s shot past the post.

Surridge thought he’d equalised in the final moments but VAR intervened and ruled it out as Wilson was in an offside position.

There was still time for another Saints attack, though, with Adams drilling his strike past Ramsdale.

Saints managed to hold on and see the game out to make it 49 points for the season, three more than ex-boss Claude Puel managed in 2016/17.
