SAINTS under-23s were edged out 1-0 by National League opponents Woking at Staplewood this afternoon.

The only goal of the contest came on 54 minutes, when Jayden Wareham tucked in following a cross by one of the Cards trialists.

Saints used a mixture of both under-23s and under-18s with Will Ferry and Tom O'Connor included following their time away with Republic of Ireland under-21s.

Harry Lewis started in goal, with Jake Hesketh operating from the wing.

Saints had the first chance of the contest, with Enzo Robise heading wide from a Ferry corner.

Jack Cook headed over for Woking soon after, before Josh Sims burst into life, twice testing goalkeeper Craig Ross.

Lewis was then called into a fine stop at the other end, denying John Goddard one-on-one.

The chances kept flowing with Josh Casey smashing the crossbar for Woking as the half ended goalless.

But the deadlock was broken after the restart as Wareham turned past substitute goalkeeper Jack Bycroft.

Ramello Mitchell and Kazeem Olaigbe went close for Saints but could not find the breakthrough.

The final chance fell to James Morris, but Woking held on for victory.
