FORMER Manchester United captain Roy Keane slammed Saints skipper James Ward-Prowse for "cheating" in England's victory over Iceland.

The dramatic contest sparked into life in the dying minutes, with Raheem Sterling putting Gareth Southgate's men 1-0 up from the penalty spot after a handball by Sverrir Ingason.

But Iceland quickly went down the other end and were presented with the golden opportunity to nick a point from the Nations League contest, after Joe Gomez hauled down Holmbert Fridjonsson in the box.

Ward-Prowse and Ings help England to victory

Ward-Prowse, making his first start for England, was then seen appearing to scuff up the penalty spot before former Aston Villa man Birkir Bjarnason stepped up and fired it over the crossbar.

Speaking as a pundit on ITV, former Republic of Ireland international Keane said: "It's cheating. I don't like to see that.

"I'm talking about the spirit of the game. It's not allowed, it's cheating."

But ex-Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright commented: "I don't mind that from an England player. What I like about Ward-Prowse is he's got that about him. He's got that little devilment about him.

"To see an England player doing it, if that happens in a competition and we get something from it, I'm not going to complain. Whether it's cheating or not, it's happened and if that gets us to the next round, I can live with that."
