THE Premier League has announced three positive COVID-19 cases from 1,605 players and staff in its first round of testing for the new campaign.
As what happened during Project Restart last season, top-flight clubs will hold regular tests to ensure fixtures are able to take place safely.
A statement from the Premier League read: “The Premier League can confirm that between Monday 31 August and Sunday 6 September, 1,605 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19.
“Of these, there were three new positive tests.
“Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.
“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
Manchester City on Monday announced Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez returned positive tests and will now self-isolate in accordance with government guidelines.
